                      Dandenong Easter Cup 2009
                    ***************************************
This 5-round tournament has an unusual format,
                       1 x 60min per player game worth 5 points
2 x 10min per player game worth 1 point each
with a total of 7-point available each round.

The first round of the Easter Cup mostly went with ratings, although some points and half-points were grabbed in the minor games by the lower rated players.

The only major upset was Syf Pronk, who recovered from losses in the two minor games to overcome Chris Potter in the main game and take the round 5-2. Syf hasn't played for quite a while and all members were pleased to see him back, with the possible exception of Chris.

Although both Habib Hessari and Elvis Espejo are unrated, they were given provisional ratings placing them in the top half of the draw, (based on their results in the Summer Swiss). And they didn't disappoint the DOP as both managed 7-0 victories, but both will finally meet some strong opposition next week which should test them.

Regards; Garry Lycett

The the third round saw the four equal leaders meeting on the top two boards, Manny Chua vs Abdulwahab Rashid and Pezhman Ghayoori vs Matthew Potter. The higher rated Abdulwahab and Matthew each won both 1-point 10-minute games, but Manny and Pezhman played will with both 5-point 1-hour games drawn. So now none of the four are still leading. Insead it is Don Machell (6-1 vs Rhys Hopkins) and Daniel Potter (7-0 vs Ramo Burzic) who swept past them all and into the joint the lead with  19 /21. They will meet on top board next week. Abdulwahab and Matthew are both 18.5-points and meet on board two next week.Given the scoring system in this event 1/2-point is very little with 14-points on offer in the final two rounds. But these four have established a slight break on the remainder of the field, with Garry Lycett 17-points, Manny Chua and Pezhman Ghayoori 16.5-points and Miralem Campara 15.5-points.
Miralem played a very good game giving up a bishop for an attack and finally forcing checkmate against Ahmet Yilmaz. Garry had a very lucky escape against Syf Pronk. Despite being rated 511-points lower, Syf had outplayed Garry and was the exchange up with a better position and twenty minutes on the clock to his opponents two. Garry set one last desperate cheap trap and Syf needlessly rushed his move and fell for it.
Following are te results of Rd3 & the pairings for Rd4.

After four rounds the most surprising thing about the standings is that the top five places are held by the top five rated players, in sequence. Don Machell moved into outright lead when he defeated Daniel Potter 7-0. The scoreline doesn't really reflect how well Daniel played, he was the exchange up and in a good position. But Don is very good at spotting and then setting up possible tactics, in case his opponent goes wrong, which Daniel did, allowing Don a forced mate.

Don is now 26 / 28 and a 1.5-point leader over his final round opponent Abdulwahab Rashid. The two 1-point 10 minute games will be crucial in this encounter, if Don splits them 1-1 he will only need a draw in the main game to finish ahead of Abdulwahab. But if Abdulwahab takes them 2-0 he will be the one only needing a draw.

And of course hoping for a draw on top board will be Garry Lycett, 2-points behind Don, he would need a 7-0 win over Rhys Hopkins to have a chance. Given his recent record against Rhys, (1 loss, 1 draw), this seems unlikely.

Even Miralem Campara with a 7-0 win over Bahri Senturk and the right result on top board has a chance of winning.

Following are the results from Rd4 and the pairings for Rd5.

The final round of the Easter Cup started with 4 players having a chance of tournament victory. Two of them, Garry Lycett and Miralem Campara, needed 7-0 wins and a draw on the top board to have a chance. After about 15 minutes Garry was out of the running after losing both 10-minute games to Rhys Hopkins in very quick time. He was followed shortly afterwards by Miralem who also managed to lose both 10-minute games to Bahri Senturk.

This meant the tournament winner would be decided by the top board game between the top two seeded players.
Don Machell went into the final round leading by 1.5-points, and after squaring the 10-minute games with Abdulwahab Rashid 1-1, he knew that a draw would suffice to give him victory. I didn't see any of the game and so I am not sure if needing a win Abdulwahab took too many risks, but in the end it was Don who won the main 5-point game and finished clearly first in the event. Congratulations to Don Machell who has started the year well, winning both events held at Dandenong so far. He was the only player to win all five main games, and finished 7 / 10 in the rapid games.

Second and third went to Garry Lycett and Miralem Campara respectively. They both recovered to win their main games of the night, winning their matches 5-2 and moving past Abdulwahab who finished =4th / 5th  with Matthew Potter. Garry nor Miralem were the only other players apart from Don to go through the event undefeated in the main games. Both finished with 4 wins and a draw (against each other in Rd2). But their rapid skills were lacking, Garry finishing 6.5 / 10 and Miralem 5 / 10 in the quicker version.

One player who had a very good tournament was Daniel Potter, finishing 6th with 25-points, he won 4 / 5 main games. His only loss was to the winner and in that game he was probably the only player to have Don in any real trouble.

Next Wednesday 6th May is the first of the clubs four Lightning Tournaments, each players best two results going towards the overall club
Lightning Championship.
Following that the Autumn Open begins 13th May, more details will be forwarded shortly.

Following are the Rd5 results and the final crosstable.
