A reminder to all Dandenong members that the club has moved premises.
The first round of the next tournament September 5th, (9-round Rapidplay),
will be held at the new venue.
The new venue is located at:   John Pandazopoulos Hall, 78 Power Road,
Doveton, 3177.

ROUND 7

Congratulations to the winners of the five tournaments.
The results were forwarded for rating early this morning, (30th August),
and will be included in the ratings to be released 1st September.

Premier Grade
Domagoj Dragicevic finished in clear first place with a two point margin
over his nearest rival. It looked as though he would notch up another
victory when Malcolm Pyke found himself in what can only be described as a
woefully bad position very early on. But Malcolm pressed on until he fought
back to just a horrible position, he then improved it to just an exchange
down losing endgame. Domagoj had probably assumed from much earlier that
the win would simply eventuate and wasn't expecting this sort of a fight.
Eventually Malcolm was able to escape with a draw and explained later a
theory of "infinite resistance".
Domagoj finished undefeated on 6 / 7 and was clearly the dominant player in
this event.
Milenko Lojanica finished in outright second place on 4 / 7, and his
brother Zdravko third on 3.5 after they drew their game quickly.
Mehmedalija Dizdarevic and Don Machell played the longest game of the night
and it was hard to tell who had the upper hand. Finally a draw was agreed.
Frank Silas finished a good tournament with a win over Richard Voon. Frank
won two games in this event which was more than Pyke, Dizdarevic,
Z.Lojanica and Machell who surprisingly could only win one game each.
Scores:  Dragicevic 6 / 7;  M.Lojanica 4;  Z.Lojanica 3.5;  Pyke,
Dizdarevic, Silas, Voon 3;  Machell 2.5

A-Grade
Eddie Kocjancic won his last round over Sadedin Redzepagic to finish a
deserved equal first with Garry Lycett, both players ended with 4.5 / 6.
Miralem Campara gave Tahir Lushaj a bit to much activity and two connected
passed pawns. Despite holding out for quite a while Miralem went down in
the end. Tahir's unfortunate forfeit last week could have cost him a chance
of equal first as he finished on 3.5
The best game of the night was Graham Shaw's exchange sac against Bob
Parrot. At first I thought he didn't have enough but Graham was able to
move his knights into very strong positions and when he got two pawns to
the sixth rank it was just a matter of time. Bob tried a few tricks to
muddy the waters but Graham didn't fall for anything and won a fine game.
Scores:  Kocjancic, Lycett 4.5 / 6;  Lushaj, Shaw 3.5;  Campara 2.5;
Parrot 1.5;  Redzepagic 1

B-Grade
Manny Chua continued his run with a win over Michael Potter taking him to 6
/ 7 and a 1.5-point gap to second placed Mendel Armerman.
Mendel got to second by winning a rook ending over Mirko Kudric, who last
week was playing for first place but two losses pushed him back to fourth.
Chris Potter finished the tournament well with a win over Ahmet Yilmaz
taking him to 4-points and outright third.
Unfortunately for orthodontic reasons Don Maciulaitis was forced to forfeit
his game against Nick Vitkovic.
Scores:  Chua 6 / 7;  Armerman 4.5;  C.Potter 4;  Kudric 3.5;  Vitkovic 3;
Maciulaitis, M.Potter 2.5;  Yilmaz 2

C-Grade
This grade could have been the closest with only 1/2-point separating
second - sixth places. But Pezhman Ghayoori was way out in front to finish
with 6 / 7 and clear first. In last nights games Peter Keefe finished with
his second win in a row, this time against Syf Pronk. Daniel Potter and
Victor Lane agreed a peaceful draw. The other winners were Pezhman and
Peter Pispek, both on fofeit against Daniel Sabolcki and Rhys Hopkins.
Scores:  Ghayoori 6 / 7;  Sabolcki 4;  Hopkins, Potter, Lane, Pispek 3.5;
Pronk, Keefe 2

D-Grade
With all the other grades winners decided before the final round started,
or shortly thereafter, all the interest lay in the battle for D-Grade. John
Seehusen and  Graham McEachern were equal leaders but both facing tough
opponents. John ensured at least equal first when he defeated Geoff Lee in
fine style. This left Graham having to win his game against Alan Gray to
share the spoils. It didn't seem likely as Alan, (himself playing for
outright second), played carefully and a position with queen, two rooks and
six pawns each was reached and neither side seemed to have any weaknesses.
Although Graham tried to find a breakthrough he had to settle for swapping
off the queen and a rook to end up in a position that was completely dead
drawn. After fighting so well for so long Alan then made a move that just
gave up his rook, and handed Graham equal first place with John. Both
players finished on 6 / 7 and deserved the tournament win. After a good
tournament in which he defeated one of the winners, (and should have drawn
with the other), Alan retained outright third despite his loss.
Ashley Mison won on forfeit against Yassar Ragab to finish level with Geoff
Lee on 4-points while in the other game Henning Rasmussen and Lee Keskic
agreed to share the point.
Scores:  Seehusen, McEachern 6 / 7;  Gray 4.5;  Lee, Mison 4;  Ragab 2;
Rasmussen 1;  Keskic 0.5

Following are the round 7 results.

ROUND 6

The winners of two of the grades, (Premier and B-Grade), were decided after
last nights penultimate round. Two of the other grades, (A-Grade and
C-Grade), have players going into the final round with a 1-point lead and
at least equal first assured. But D-Grade is still undecided with the top
four all within a point of each other, and the two equal leaders are paired
against the two players just behind them in the last round.

Premier Grade
The Domagoj Dragicevic show continued with yet another victory, this time
he won a piece against Mehmedalija Dizdarevic and just nursed it to a
straightforward win. This takes Domagoj to 5.5 / 6 and a full 2-point lead
going into the final round, with the tournament win wrapped up. His score
is currently the highest in any grade and to do it at this level is very
impressive indeed. With the last round being played 29th August Domagoj's
only concern was whether the results would be submitted in time to be
included in the September ratings.
Milenko Lojanica moved into outright second place on 3.5 / 6 with a win
over Don Machell. At one stage when I looked material was level but Milenko
was squashing Don, with nearly all his pieces up on the fourth and fifth
ranks and Don just trying to hold him out. Eventually Don was found himself
in zugzwang and the game was over.
Frank Silas arrived about 1/2-hour late, but was the first game finished
when he recorded his first win with a quick kingside attack over the
previously unbeaten Zdravko Lojanica.
Richard Voon continued his comeback with his third straight win, this time
with a well played ending against Malcolm Pyke.
Scores:  Dragicevic 5.5 / 6;  M.Lojanica 3.5;  Z.Lojanica, Voon 3;
Dizdarevic, Pyke 2.5;  Machell, Silas 2

A-Grade
Garry Lycett managed to hang on against Eddie Kocjancic and get a draw
which took him to 4.5 / 5 and at least equal first. Eddie needed a win to
be equal leader with Garry going into the last round and played very well
to achieve a very dominating position. But he just couldn't find the
knockout blow, (no doubt Fritz will find it), and although he won a pawn it
came by swapping off his powerful dark squared bishop and relieved some of
the pressure. Eddie has improved noticeably this year and has probably
played the best chess in this grade, at no stage looking in any danger and
remaining undefeated on 3.5-points. Garry's 1-point lead is mainly due to
scoring 1.5-points from two losing positions. But Eddie can still tie for
first if he wins his last round against Redzepagic, and Garry loses his
postponed game against Campara.
Miralem Campara won a long game against Sadedin Redzepagic. Although he is
only on 1.5-points Miralem has next weeks game against Tahir Lushaj and two
postponed games against Garry Lycett and Graham Shaw to come, it is
possible he could win all three and finish equal first.
In the other game Graham Shaw won against Tahir Lushaj for the unusual
reason of Tahir moving house. Every week Frank Silas gives Tahir a lift to
and from the chess club, but last night Frank couldn't find Tahir's new
address. Tahir was still in the running for equal first if he could win his
last two rounds, but this unfortunate forfeit put him out of contention. No
doubt Frank will console him by telling him of his own win over Zdravko in
Premier Grade.
Bob Parrot had the bye.
Scores:  Lycett* 4.5 / 5;  Kocjancic 3.5 / 5;  Lushaj 2.5 / 5;  Campara**
1.5 / 3;  Shaw* 1.5 / 4;  Parrot 1.5 / 5;  Redzepagic 1 / 5;
** Miralem Campara has two postponed games, against Lycett and Shaw.

B-Grade
Manny Chua takes an unassailable lead going into the final round after last
nights win over second placed Mirko Kudric. In a close game Mirko looked to
have a winning ending, which would have given him outright first place, but
somehow he misplayed it and after both players queened Manny was able to go
on to victory. Manny is now on 5 / 6 and leads by 1.5-points over Mirko and
Mendel Armerman.
Mendel needed to defeat Chris Potter to stay in touch, Chris tried the same
version of Philidor's that was successful the previous week but perhaps
Mendel had seen that game and was prepared for it. Despite being a pawn up
Mendel could not win the ending and had to settle for a draw.
Ahmet Yilmaz scored his second win for the event, over Don Maciulaitis
while Nick Vitkovic scored his first, a forfeit over an ill Michael Potter.
Scores:  Chua 5 / 6;  Kudric, Armerman 3.5;  C.Potter 3;  Maciulaitis,
M.Potter 2.5;  Yilmaz, Vitkovic 2;

C-Grade
The two equal leaders, Daniel Sabolcki and Pezham Ghayoori, met with a
convincing win to Pezhman moving him to 5 / 6 and at least equal first in
the tournament. Daniel remains on 4-points with a chance of catching
Pezhman in the las round.
In an interesting game Daniel Potter knocked Rhys Hopkins out of
contention. Rhys needed to win or draw and then hope he could beat Pezhman
in the final round to grab a share of first place. But in the end it was
Daniel who prevailed, leaving Rhys on 3.5-points and outright third.
Peter Keefe scored his first points with an upset win over Peter Pispek.
Peter Keefe is the bottom seed and after losing all previous games his
first win was over the top seed.
In the remaining game Victor Lane won against Syf Pronk.
Scores:  Ghayoori 5 / 6;  Sabolcki 4;  Hopkins 3.5;  Potter, Lane 3; Pispek
2.5;  Pronk 2;  Keefe 1

D-Grade
John Seehusen and Graham McEachern kept equal leadership win wins against
Ashley Mison and Lee Keskic taking them to 5 / 6. Ashley's winning run of
three in a row came to an abrupt end after losing a few pieces against
John, while Graham had a fairly easy win over Lee.
Alan Gray stayed in touch going to 4.5-points when Yassar Ragab failed to
appear and Geoff Lee knocked over Henning Rasmussen to get to 4-points.
There will be a lot of interest in the final round with John Seehusen
playing Geoff Lee and Graham McEachern playing Alan Gray.
Any of the top three can still win the event, and fourth placed Geoff will
have a big say in which of them does.
Scores:  Seehusen, McEachern 5 / 6;  Gray 4.5;  Lee 4;  Mison 3;  Ragab 2;
Rasmussen 0.5;  Keskic 0

ROUND 5

Premier Grade
Domagog Dragicevic continued his very impressive performance with another
win, this time at Don Machell's expense.
The two players leading this group, Domagog Dragicevic and Zdravko
Lojanica, are the only players remaining undefeated.
But Domagoj's four wins and one draw for a score of 4.5 / 5 far outweigh
Zdravko's four draws and one win 3 / 5.
With a 1.5-point lead and only two rounds to play Domagoj looks to have
first place locked up.
Zdravko kept Malcolm Pyke to a draw in a game with an interesting finish.
Malcolm was the exchange up and pressing for a win, he returned the
exchange but was unable to force victory in the end.
Frank Silas managed to hold Milenko Lojanica to a draw, ending Milenko's
chances of winning the event.
In the remaining game Richard Voon scored his second win in a row, this
time over Mehmedalija Dizdarevic. Richard started the tournament with three
losses but is now the only player other than Domagoj to have more than one
win. He is also the only player not to have drawn a game.
Scores:  Dragicevic 4.5 / 5;  Z.Lojanica 3;  Dizdarevic, M.Lojanica, Pyke
2.5;  Machell, Voon 2;  Silas 1

A-Grade
Garry Lycett went to 4 / 4 with a win over Bob Parrot. Although material
was level Garry had a clearly better position, but while trying to work out
how to convert it to victory Bob suddenly resigned.
Garry leads the group by a point but next week plays second placed Eddie
Kocjancic who could draw level with a win.
Eddie had a win over Miralem Campara in probably the most interesting game
of the night. Eddie had won an exchange and then trapped one of Miralem's
pieces to go a whole rook up. This would normally end the game, but Miralem
managed to get two connected passed pawns to the sixth rank with a knight
behind them and it looked as though Eddie would have to give the rook back.
Just when it looked as though Miralem had the edge Eddie suddenly produced
a very clever mate in two that I think most spectators didn't see. What
made it easy to miss was because the move preceding it (Bc6 - d5) looked
like the only move to defend against Miralem's advancing e and f pawns.
This led Miralem and those watching to overlook that it also opened the
c-file up for Eddie's c8 rook to deliver mate two moves later.
In the other game Sadedin Redzepagic and Graham Shaw fought each other to a
standstill and eventually had to agree a draw.
Scores:  Lycett* 4 / 4;  Kocjancic 3 / 4;  Lushaj 2.5 / 4;  Parrot 1.5 / 5;
Redzepagic 1 / 4;  Campara** 0.5 / 2;  Shaw* 0.5 / 3
** Miralem Campara has two postponed games, against Lycett and Shaw.

B-Grade
The round started with three equal leaders, Manny Chua, Mirko Kudric and
Mendel Armerman.
But Manny Chua managed to defeat Mendel, and with Mirko battling out a draw
against Nick Vitkovic it takes Manny to 4 / 5 and a 1/2-point lead over
Mirko.
Mendel remains third on 3 / 5 with Don Maciulaitis, Chris Potter and
Michael Potter just hanging on with 2.5
Don looked to have got an advantage against Chris Potter's unusual opening.
Chris decided not to worry about things like piece development, exposed
king, opponent attacking, rooks being threatened and things of this nature.
Why bother with such trivialities when the aim of the game is to checkmate
your opponent. Chris checkmated Don with queen and knight, about the only
two pieces he moved all game.
Next week the two leaders meet with Chua playing Kudric in a game that
could decide the tournament winner.
Scores:  Chua 4 / 5;  Kudric 3.5;  Armerman 3;  Maciulaitis, C.Potter,
M.Potter 2.5;  Yilmaz, Vitkovic 1;

C-Grade
Daniel Sabolcki ramained undefeated with a draw against Rhys Hopkins. It
kept his 1/2-point lead over Rhys but allowed Pezham Ghayoori, with a win
over Peter Keefe to join him on 4 / 5.
Peter Pispek and Daniel Potter probably lost all chance of winning the
tournament in this round. Peter could only draw a game against Victor Lane
that he should have won after being a piece up, Daniel lost to Syf Pronk in
the other game.
But it is still hard to pick a winner, next week the two leaders play each
other while Rhys plays Daniel Potter.
Scores:  Sabolcki, Ghayoori 4 / 5;  Hopkins 3.5;  Pispek 2.5;  Potter,
Pronk, Lane 2;  Keefe 0

D-Grade
John Seehusen lost outright leadership when Alan Gray won their match. Like
the previous round Alan got it to a bishop and rook pawn against a lone
king, but this time he made sure the bishop was the right colour and was
able to force victory.
Alan moved to 3.5 / 5 and within 1/2-point of the lead while Graham
McEachern became equal leader on 4 / 5 after beating Yassar Ragab.
Also well in touch are Geoff Lee and Ashley Mison. Geoff beat Lee Keskic
while Ashley notched up his third straight win with a victory over Henning
Rasmussen.
The pairings for the final two rounds make the winner here impossible to
predict, any of the top five who can win their last two games will deserve
victory.
Scores:  Seehusen,  McEachern 4 / 5;  Gray 3.5;  Lee, Mison 3;  Ragab 2;
Rasmussen 0.5;  Keskic 0

Following are the postponed games results, round 5 results and the pairings

ROUND 4

Premier Grade
Two players, Malcolm Pyke and Richard Voon scored their first wins in this
event.
There are now six players with one win, unusually only one player, Domagoj
Dragicevic, has scored more than one win. He has three, and after last
nights victory over Milenko Lojanica he moves to 3.5 / 4 and the outright
lead. Domagoj won a pawn early and Milenko never really looked in the
contest.
Malcolm's victory came at the expense of Frank Silas. The game was
materially even most of the way through but Malcolm's superior king
activity in the ending was enough to score the point. Frank remains the
only winless contestant on 0.5
Richard's win was over Don Machell. Don needed a win to stay in touch with
Domagoj for first place. In the longest game of the night Don was a pawn
down but pressuring Richard's kingside with some heavy artillery. Richard
had been defending well but just as the game reached a crucial stage Don
blundered and it was all over.
In the other game Mehmedalija Dizdarevic seemed to get a slight advantage
out of the opening against Zdravko Lojanica but a draw was agreed shortly
thereafter. These two and Domagoj are the only unbeaten players, Zdravko is
proving very hard to beat but needs to win more to claim first in a
tournament this strong.
There is one postponed game in this group, Mehmedalija Dizdarevic vs
Milenko Lojanica, to be played next week that will be crucial. If
Mehmedalija wins he will be only 1/2-point behind Domagoj, any other result
and Domagoj will be at least 1-point ahead of the nearest competitor.
Scores:  Dragicevic 3.5 / 4;  Z.Lojanica 2.5;  Dizdarevic*, Machell, Pyke
2;  M.Lojanica* 1.5;  Voon 1;  Silas 0.5

A-Grade
Only two games were played with Lycett vs Campara being postponed until
next week.
Tahir Lushaj and Eddie Kocjancic both kept alive chances of winning the
event with wins over Bob Parrot and Graham Shaw respectively.
Both games were hard fought. Bob went down a pawn early and Tahir seemed to
have the advantage, but Bob defended well and kept him at bay for a long
time. Eventually Tahir was able to breakthrough on the queenside while Bob
tried to counter this by getting his own passed pawns on the kingside. But
Tahir's pawns were faster and it was all over.
Eddie beat Graham in a very interesting game, Eddie was attacking but it
looked very complicated and I couldn't tell who had any advantage. In the
end Eddie broke through for the victory.
It is hard to tell who might win this group, Miralem Campara has two
postponed games and some players have had a bye and others have a bye to
come.
Scores:  Lycett* 3 / 3;  Lushaj 2.5 / 4;  Kocjancic 2 / 3;  Parrot 1.5 / 4;
Campara** 0.5 / 1;  Redzepagic 0.5 / 3;  Shaw* 0 / 2

B-Grade
Mirko Kudric and Manny Chua were able to join Mendel Armerman in the lead
on 3 / 4 in this group.
Mirko defeated Ahmet Yilmaz after being a piece down early in the game.
Mirko managed to get a number of passed pawns and Ahmet was forced to give
back a piece to stop one of them queening. But Mirko had still more pawns
coming down and won soon after.
Manny beat top seed Nick Vitkovic who is having not one of his best
tournaments.
Mendel was playing Don Maciulaitis and in a close game looked to be
pressing for victory. But Don kept his unbeaten record intact with his
third draw of the event.
In the other game both Chris Potter and Michael Potter matched Don's record
of three draws, but they each have a loss against Don's win.
This tournament looks as though it will be a close finish. There are three
equal leaders who all play each other in the remaining rounds, but they are
only 1/2-point ahead of Don who plays three of the bottom four in the final
rounds.
Scores:  Armerman, Kudric, Chua 3 / 4;  Maciulaitis 2.5;  C.Potter,
M.Potter 1.5;  Yilmaz 1;  Vitkovic 0.5

C-Grade
Rhys Hopkins beat Peter Keefe in a solid victory that takes him to 3-points
and the lead.
But the two postponed games will have a big say in who takes out this
tournament.
Daniel Sabolcki made a piece sac to open up Daniel Potter's king, the
attack was successful and Daniel S is now only 1/2-point behind Rhys with a
postponed game in hand.
Pezham Ghayoori beat Victor Lane to be 1-point behind Rhys and also with a
postponed game in hand. The game looked very even and headed for a draw
until Victor overlooked an en prise piece in the ending.
Syf Pronk beat Peter Pispek and although 2-points behind Rhys he has two
postponed games still to play.
The losses by Peter Pispek and Daniel Potter left them 1-point adrift but
with the two Daniels still to play Rhys and Daniel S stil to play Peter
this grade is
still open with six players still having a chance of victory.
Scores:  Hopkins 3 / 4;  Sabolcki* 2.5;  Ghayoori*, Pispek, Potter 2;  Lane
1.5;  Pronk** 1;  Keefe 0

D-Grade
John Seehusen continued on his merry way with another win taking him to
4-points, last night he defeated Yassar Ragab in an ending that should
never have been reached given the chances both players had earlier had.
Alan Gray is 1.5-points behind but plays John next week in a game he needs
to win to keep alive his chances of tournament victory. Last night Alan
looked headed for a win over Henning Rasmussen with a rook, bishop and two
pawns against Henning's Rook and pawn. Alan took the right approach, swap
material and with the help of the extra piece push the remaining pawn to
victory. But he overlooked that his remaining pawn was a rook pawn queening
on a white square while he had a black squared bishop. With Henning's king
able to occupy the corner it was of course a draw.
Graham McEachern was able to defeat Geoff Lee in a close encounter, this
left them both on 2-points but Graham has a postponed game that could bring
him to within a point of John.
Coming back after many years Ashley Mison seems to be getting back into it,
last night he beat Lee Keskic for his second win in a row. He might have
left his run a bit late, but with an upcoming game against John he could
stiil have a big say in who does win the event.
Scores:  Seehusen 4 / 4;  Gray 2.5;  McEachern*, Lee, Mison, Ragab 2;
Rasmussen* 0.5;  Keskic 0

ROUND 3

Premier Grade
It is not easy to predict who will win this tournament. But it is easy to
predict who will not.
In the only decisive game in this group Richard Voon slumped to his third
straight loss, this time at the hands of Domagoj Dragicevic. This puts
Richard out of contention for first whilst Domagoj is now leading with 2.5
/ 3.
Don Machell and Zdravko Lojanica exchanged down to two rooks and seven
pawns each and happily split the point. This leaves them both with 2 / 3.
Frank Silas scored his first points with a draw against Mehmedalija
Dizdarevic, Frank was a pawn up and looked to have some chances at one
stage although Mehmedalija also had plenty of counterplay.
Malcolm Pyke and Milenko Lojanica also drew their game.
Milenko and Mehmedalija are both on 1.5 / 2 and the winner of their
postponed game would be equal first.
Malcolm has gone three rounds without a win, (a long time since that
happened at Dandenong), and on 1 / 3 needs to string some wins together to
stay with a chance of victory.

A-Grade
Sam Biondo has been withdrawn leaving only seven players.
Players paired to play Sam now have a bye on that night and the Campara -
Biondo round two forfeit will not count.
The postponed round one game; Biondo - Shaw is to be replaced by last
nights postponed game Shaw - Campara and will be played 8/8/07 on the free
night between rounds four and five.
This left only two games played in this group last night.
Sadedin Redzepagic gave over 1/2-hour head start to Bob Parrot, but he is
generally a quick player so it didn't have a big effect. In the end they
played out a draw. Sadedin scored hist first points with this, going to 0.5
/ 3. Bob Parrot is proving a tough competitor to beat in this event, three
straight draws against higher rated players taking him to 1.5 / 3.
Garry Lycett held on to the outright lead with a win over top seed Tahir
Lushaj. An opening mistake by Garry allowed Tahir to sac a piece for 3
protected passed queenside pawns. Tahir missed one opportunity to keep
pressure on and then allowed Garry to win the exchange due to mate threats.
This gave Garry a rook for the pawns which proved too much. Garry has gone
to 3 / 3 with Tahir staying on 1.5 / 3.
On 1 / 2 is Eddie Kocjancic who had a bye, whilst Graham Shaw - Miralem
Campara was postponed. Having also both had a bye these two have only
played one game each with Miralem on 0.5 and Graham on 0.

B-Grade
Mendel Armerman defeated Nick Vitkovic in a long bishop vs knight ending,
taking Mendel to 2.5 / 3 and outright lead.
But Don Maciulaitis, Mirko Kudric and Manny Chua are all hot on his heels
with 2 / 3.
Last night Mirko and Manny defeated Chris Potter and Ahmet Yilmaz
respectively while Don drew a tough fight with Michael Potter.
Chris, Michael and Ahmet are all a further point back on 1 / 3 with top
seed Nick having a tough time and trailing on 0.5 / 3.

C-Grade
This is very even with three players, Rhys Hopkins, Peter Pispek and Daniel
Potter all leading on 2 / 3, whilst Daniel Sabolcki could overtake them, he
is on 1.5 / 2 and a postponed game against Syf Pronk. Victor Lane is also
only 1/2-point behind on 1.5 / 3 and Ghayoori Pezham could catch the
leaders as he is on 1 / 2 and also has a postponed game against Syf Pronk.
Meanwhile Syf himself could still be equal first if he wins both postponed
games.
The only player out of the running to win the event would be Peter Keefe
who trailing with 0 / 3.
Daniel Potter could have gone a long way to winning this tournament if he
beat top seed Peter Pispek last night. But Peter was able to prevail and
get back to equal leadership. Rhys Hopkins stayed with them by defeating
Victor Lane in a rook and pawn ending. Rhys is doing very well and is a
chance to win this, his forthcoming games against the two Daniels will
prove crucial. Daniel Sabolcki is getting back into the swing of things,
only three games since returning and the sequence has been loss - draw -
win, an ominous pattern for his remaining opponents in this. Last night he
was able to win a double piece vs rook ending against Peter Keefe. Peter
has been playing o.k. but with little luck

D-Grade
John Seehusen is one of only two players in the five tournaments to be on 3
/ 3.  He got there by last night beating top seed Graham McEachern.
John is a point ahead of Yasser Ragab, Alan Gray and Geoff Lee with Graham
and Ashley Mison a further point back.
Last night Ashley Mison knocked over Geoff Lee which indicates he is
improving quickly.
Alan Gray won a piece, then the exchange to go a rook up, and then
blundered the rook to make the material level. A lot of players collapse
when blundering in a winning position, even though they still have chances.
But Alan took it in his stride and managed to then outplay his opponent,
Lee Keskic, in a knight vs bishop ending.
Yasser Ragab defeated Henning Rasmussen to stay in equal second place.

Following are the round 3 results and the round 4 pairings.

ROUND 2

One player joined the competition this week so there are now 40-players
making an even 5 x 8-player tournaments.
All the tournaments appear fairly evenly matched, last night in three of
the five grades the top seed was beaten.

Premier Grade
This event had it's first big upset when reigning club champion and top
seed Malcolm Pyke was beaten by Mehmedalija Dizdarevic. With a queen, two
rooks and pawns each Malcolm was a queenside pawn up and looked to be in a
solid position against Mehmedalija who was trying to break through on the
kingside. When I walked away it looked as though it would go quite a while
longer, when all of a sudden it ended, Malcolm apparently making a blunder
that caused resignation.
Don Machell won an interesting ending against Frank Silas, looking at the
final position I wondered why Frank had played on so long in an obviously
losing position. But when Don showed me the trick Frank was playing for, it
turned out to be not so obvious, indeed I likely would have fallen for it
and lost.
Domagoj Dragicevic pressed hard against Zdravko Lojanica when both had a
rook, knight and pawns. But he was unable to break through and the game
finished in a draw.
Milenko Lojanica opened his account with a win over Richard Voon who lost a
few pawns early and never recovered.
The leaders in this group are Don, Domagoj and Zdravko all on 1.5 / 2,
Mehmedalija and Milenko are on 1-point with a postponed game against each
other. Malcolm is on 1/2-point and both Frank and Richard are yet to
trouble the scorers.

A-Grade
Garry Lycett moved to 2 / 2 and the lead with a win over Graham Shaw. Garry
was able to win an undefended knight that had no available squares, but
despite this Graham still had a lot of counterplay. Unfortunately Graham
never got to exhibit this counterplay after overlooking an en prise rook.
Tahir Lushaj moved to 1.5-points with an interesting win over Sadedin
Redzepagic and Miralem Campara is on the same score after Sam Biondo
forfeited.
Both Eddie Kocjancic and Bob Parrot are on 1-point after two draws, last
night against each other.
Graham and Sam are on 0-points with a postponed game against each other,
while Sadedin is probably a bit unfortunate to have two losses after
playing quite well.

B-Grade
This could be the closest of the five tournaments this year. After two
rounds nobody is on 2-points and nobody is on 0-points.
Leading are Don Maciulaitis and Mendel Armerman on 1.5-points. Don's
beloved Geelong have won ten in a row in the AFL, last night Don started
what he hopes will be six in a row when he accounted for Mirko Kudric.
Mendel played Michael Potter and it came down to an ending with same
coloured bishops and four pawns each. Michael had a passed pawn giving him
some advantage, but when he erred, giving Mendel a far passed pawn and
losing his own it looked as though Mendel would win. Mendel had winning
chances but one slip allowed Michael to sac his bishop for Mendel's
remaining pawns and the game was drawn.
Ahmet Yilmaz had his first win at Nick Vitkovic's expense, while Chris
Potter and Manny Chua fought out a draw, the second in a row for both of
them. At one stage Manny was a pawn up and had 43 minutes on the clock to
Chris's 41 seconds. But Chris managed to cleverly sac another pawn which
left Manny's pawns weak, Chris then got his pawns back and even looked
better.
Chris, Manny, Ahmet and Mirko are all on 1-point with Michael and Nick on
1/2-point.

C-Grade
I din't see a lot of these games as three of them finished reasonably
quickly.
Daniel Potter was able to take the outright lead on 2 / 2 after his win
over Peter Keefe.
Top seed Peter Pispek lost his game against  Pezhman Ghayoori, both are now
on 1-point along with Rhys Hopkins who knocked off Syf Pronk.
Victor Lane and Daniel Sabolcki played a colourful game which looked as
though it would be over one way or the other quite early. Daniel had
sacrificed a piece in the opening for an attack on Victor's king. With not
enough pieces developed his attack looked dubious to me, and so it proved.
But Daniel kept going and was able to even up the material and even get to
a rook ending a pawn up. It eventually finished in a draw and at about
11.45pm was the last game to finish.
Victor is second on 1.5-points while Daniel Sabolcki is on .5-points with a
postponed game against Syf to come.

D-Grade
Geoff Lee and John Seehusen both moved to 2 / 2, Geoff after a hard fought
win against Alan Gray. It is easy to see how much effort both Geoff and
Alan put in by their expressions at the board, mostly grimacing, and I knew
this game would go a long time. In the end Geoff had an extra piece and
used it to create a number of extra pawns. John had an easier time after
Henning Rasmussen was late returning from a holiday and couldn't appear.
Yassar Ragab and Graham McEachern joined Alan on 1-point after victories
against Lee Keskic and Ashley Mison respectively. Graham also has a game in
hand with a postponed game against Henning still to be played.

Following are the round 2 results and the round 3 pairings.

ROUND 1

39 players entered this years Dandenong Grades Tournaments, this made 4 x 8
player and 1 x 7 player round-robins with players grouped by rating.
It is seven rounds from 11th July - 29th August, with 8th August scheduled
for postponed games.
With a round available to play postponements a place is available in
D-Grade for anybody rated under 1200 still interested in entering.

Premier Grade is a FIDE rated tournament and has a strong field.
Top seed Malcolm Pyke was held to a draw by Don Machell. It reached a stage
where Malcolm had N+4P vs B+4P, Malcolm had an additional queenside pawn
and Don an extra kingside pawn. It looked drawish then, but they played on
for another couple of hours. Don may have had some advantage and possible
winning chances when he went a pawn up, but it came down to Don's king and
rook pawn vs Malcolm's king.
As the winner of last years A-Grade Frank Silas qualified to enter the
Premier Grade, but he will find the opposition a lot tougher and last night
went down quickly to Domagoj Dragicevic.
Zdravko Lojanica played very well to come up with a clever rook sac
combination that forced mate in six against Richard Voon.
The remaining game Mehmedalija Dizdarevic vs Milenko Lojanica was
postponed.

A-Grade has Tahir Lushaj as top seed, he was held to a draw in an
interesting game against Eddie Kocjancic.
Second seed Miralem Campara was also held to a draw by second bottom seed
Bob Parrot. After giving up a piece to attack Miralem's weakened king it
looked as though Bob might weave a mating net, but in the end Miralem just
had enough to hang on and Bob eventually settled for a forced perpetual.
Sadedin Redzepagic went on the attack against Garry Lycett's king, but in
bringing his knight into it he allowed his knight on f3 to block the rook
on f4 from retreating. Garry managed to trap the rook, winning the exchange
and the game.
The remaining game Sam Biondo vs Graham Shaw was postponed.

B-Grade will be interesting, looking at the field I think anyone is capable
of winning, there is only 71-points between the top seed, Nick Vitkovic,
and bottom seed, Chris Potter. Oddly enough these two played last night and
the game finished in a draw.
It was good to see Don Maciulaitis return for his first tournament of the
year, in round one he managed to draw with Manny Chua in a tough encounter.
The winners in this group were Mirko Kudric and Mendel Armerman over
Michael Potter and Ahmet Yilmaz respectively.

C-Grade top seed, Peter Pispek, managed to overcome Rhys Hopkins last night
in what could turn out to be a very important game. After his performance
in the Autumn Open where he picked up a rating prize I would give Rhys a
good chance of winning this. Apart from Graham McEachern there is only
100-points separating the others so it is another tournament that should
have a close finish. Graham is moving up a grade and is the lowest rated by
about 150-points, but he has been improving and this tournament should be
good for him. Last night he got off to a good start by winning against
Daniel Sabolcki. Daniel has returned after leaving about seven years ago to
concentrate on his studies, he was an improving junior who was probably
underrated at 1421. Although he will be rusty he is likely to get back into
it quickly and could cause problems to opponents towards the end of the
tournament.
Daniel Potter is also capable of winning this, but is coming off a poor
performance in the Autumn Open. Last night he started well with a win over
Pezhman Ghayoori.
In a long game Victor Lane eventually succeeded against Peter Keefe. It
looked as though Peter might hold on when Victor overlooked a few winning
chances and Peter had his own threats against Victor's king. But Peter's
king was too exposed and he was forced to give up material to avoid mate.

D-Grade has only seven players with one player getting a bye each week,
last night it was Henning Rasmussen's turn.
John Seehusen and Geoff Lee are the top seeds in this, Yassar Ragab and
Alan Gray are two others I think will have a good chance to win.
Last night John, Geoff and Alan all got off to a good start with wins in
the first round.
Geoff defeated Yassar, after Yassar's effort in the Autumn Open it signals
that Geoff may be in good form.
John won against Lee Keskic after attaining so much material superiority
that almost any move that wasn't stalemate had to be checkmate.
Joining them with a win was Alan who defeated Ashley Mison in one of the
last games to finish. Coming back after a 20-year gap Ashley will be prone
to errors and last night it cost him a rook. But despite being a rook down
he fought quite well and Alan had to be careful to get the point. Ashley is
someone else who I think will cause problems for opponents towards the end
of the event when a bit of rust has worn off.

Those players wondering where Craig Baxter has been for most of the year,
his wife Kristina gave birth to a boy on 29th June.
Jack Thomas Baxter entered the world at 9 pounds 14 ounces. I'm not sure
how much that is in kilos, but I'm glad I'm not a woman.
Craig has said he will return, I think after enough sleepless nights and
nappy-changing he will come and play chess for relaxation.

DOPs / Arbiters are used to complaints about various things. Round-robin
tournaments are easier, the players are given numbers by some random
selection, last night this involved players drawing numbers out of a box.
All fair and above board. The pairings themselves are known in advance by a
standard pairing formula used in all round-robin events, also being used in
these grades events. All fair and above board.
Despite this, one player still managed to complain about the round two
pairings as being unfair !!
No surprise who it was, he plays in Premier Grade and his initials are
Richard Voon.

Following are the round 1 results and the round 2 pairings.
