Dandenong Rapid Play 2007

Round 7
The two leaders, Milenko Lojanica & Amir Mahic, both went to 6 / 7 with
wins over Don Machell and Zdravko Lojanica. The only likely challenger was
Abdulwahab Rashid who beat Miralem Campara to be on 5.5. After this round
there were eight players on 4.5 in equal 4th place, but with only two
rounds remaining it looked hard for anyone to catch the top three. Eddie
Kocjancic managed to lose his fourth game in a row, (to Graham Shaw),
something he couldn't recall ever doing before.

Round 8
Neither leader managed to win in this round. Amir lost to Abdulwahab whilst
Milenko could only manage a draw in a rook and pawn ending against Richard
Voon. Milenko remained equal leader, but equal with Abdulwahab as both were
now on 6.5. Amir remained on 6 while four players; Mehmedalija Dizdarevic,
Mehmed Burak, Don Machell and Zdravko Lojanica still remained in the hunt
on 5.5. The best finish I saw  in this round was Chris Potter's win over
Mendel Armerman. Despite being a piece down and his king under what was
close to a mating attack Chris managed to produce a counter attack that was
decisive.
Eddie managed to get back on the winners list with a victory over Ashley
Mison.

Round 9
The first game finished was when Abdulwahab Rashid cleaned up Mehmed Burak
in the opening 5 minutes to finish on 7.5-points and at least a share of
first. The only person who could catch him now was Milenko and his game
against Mehmedalija was the last game finished. Although the exchange down
Mehmedalija had what looked to be a good attack going but was running very
short on time. Milenko managed to swap off material and had probably
reached a winning ending just as Mehmedalija's time ran out. This allowed
Milenko to join Abdulwahab in first place. Equal third were Amir Mahic and
Zdravko Lojnaica a point behind on 6.5, equal fifth were Don Machell and
Bahri Senturk on 6. Bahri had a great night winning all three games.

Following are the final standings and the results for Rds 7 - 9.

Round 4 saw the six equal leaders whittled down to three when Milenko
Lojanica, Abdulwahab Rashid and Amir Mahic defeated Eddie Kocjancic,
Zdravko Lojanica and Rhys Hopkins to go to 3.5 / 4.  Amir and Rhys used
almost all the time available with Rhys eventually running out of time
while Amir had about 5sec remaining. There were three players on 3 / 4
chasing the leaders.

Round 5 and three leaders became two when Milenko Lojanica defeated
Abdulwahab Rashid and Amir Mahic easily accounted for Garry Lycett. Both
players were on 4.5 and now had a full 1-point lead over the seven players
in equal second place after Don Machell and Miralem Campara fought out a
draw. Sadedin Redzepagic, Richard Voon, Zdravko Lojanica and Rhys Hopkins
were able to move into equal second with wins.

Round 6 saw the two leaders battle it out. The best result for those
chasing would be if Mahic vs Lojanica,M was a draw and this was just what
happened, leaving both players on 5 / 6. This allowed Abdulwahab Rashid,
Miralem Campara, Zdravko Lojanica and Don Machell to close to within
1/2-point of the leaders on 4.5. Following these six players is Manny Chua
who won all three games to go to 4-points; there are a further eight
players on 3.5.

Next week is the final three rounds (7 - 9) of the rapidplay.

Following are the pairings for Rd 7 and the results for Rds 4 - 6.

The first three rounds of the rapid play (All / 30) were held and 34
players managed to find their way to the new venue;
John Pandazopoulos Hall, 78 Power Road, Doveton, 3177.

This event involves three games a night for three weeks to make a 9-round
tournament.

A few teething problems in the new hall, (next week we will try a different
table arrangement to utilise the space better), didn't stop the tournament
starting around 8.00pm. It was also pleasing to see two newcomers,  Shane
Lay and Drazen Guozdic, taking part.
Next week round four should be starting at the usual time of 7.30pm.

Round 1 saw most of the top board favorites win. One exception was Don
Machell who went down to Daniel Potter. Further down Gerard Barta fell to
Drazen Guozdic who made a good start to his chess career. Other upsets
involved Chris Potter and Manny Chua who held Miralem Campara and Mehmed
Burak to draws in the longest games, while Rhys Hopkins defeated Mirko
Kudric. But these upsets were based on rapidplay ratings and clearly the
rapidplay ratings of Chris, Manny and Rhys have little to do with their
ability. In each case they are 300-500 points below their normal rating.

Round 2 and top seed Milenko Lojanica went to 2 / 2 but three of the next
four seeds were held to draws; Mehmedalija Dizdarevic by Eddie Kocjancic,
Richard Voon by Ramo Burzic and Amir Mahic by Daniel Potter. Rhys Hopkins
had a good win over Sadedin Redzepagic while the same four players who drew
in round one managed to do it again in the second round. This time Campara
vs Burak and Potter,C vs Chua.

Round 3 and there were only four players on 2 / 2 going into it and they
all managed to draw against each other. The Lojanica brothers produced the
usual 30-second struggle before calling it a night but on board two Rhys
Hopkins concluded a very good night for him with a draw against Abdulwahab
Rashid.
These players were joined on 2.5-points by Eddie Kocjancic who knocked over
Richard Voon pretty quickly, and Amir Mahic who was the winner in the
nights longest game against Mehmedalija Dizdarevic.

Following these six players there are nine players on two points so next
weeks rounds 4 - 6 should be very interesting and hard fought.

Following are the pairings for Round 4.
