Dandenong Grades Tournaments 2009
39 players entered this years Grades events, split into 5 groups with D-Grade being a 7-player round robin.
Premier Grade has Milenko Lojanica as top seed by both ACF and FIDE ratings. But in the first round he could only draw against Miralem Campara. In other games Don Machell managed to defeat Mehmedalija Dizdarevic after looking to be in a horrible position. Both Richard Voon and Abdulwahab Rashid defeated the two lowest rated players, Rhys Hopkins and Phillip
Drew, in the remaining games. The top six in this group are rated closely together and then there is a big gap to Rhys and Phillip, but they are capable of causing upsets and this could be a good chance for them to grab some rating points.
A-Grade looks in ratings to be a close event, only 109-points separates the top rated Hessari Habib from the lowest rated Mendel Armerman. In round one Hessari defeated Mirko Kudric and Daniel Potter outfoxed Mendel in a Benko Gambit. Reginald Chong attempted a sacrificial attack against Manny Chua, but when it failed he was left many pawns down and lost. Chris Potter and
Pezhman Ghayoori fought out a very long game to a drawn ending, until Pezhman played his King the wrong way and suddenly his bishop couldn't control both Chris' pawns and he lost.
B-Grade has only a 161-point rating gap between highest and lowest, and the top seed, Ahmet Yilmaz, lost in round one to Peter Pispek. In other results George Tolpigin and Kevin Forster defeated Bahri Senturk and Syf Pronk respectively. The game Ismet Gungordu vs Victor Lane has been postponed.
C-Grade has newcomer Stephen Bickell as top seed, but he hasn't played for a while so it will be interesting to see how he fares. In round one he played well to defeat Alan Gray. The other higher rated players are Frank Hewitt and Peter Keefe, with the remaining players grouped about 100-points below them and looking for some scalps.
D-Grade has Ashley and Geoff Lee as the top seeds and both duly won their first round games. The other winner was Jirair Sissian who beat newcomer Craigh Smith.
Following are the pairings for the whole tournament, with the Rd 1 results shown.

Dandenong Grades Tournaments 2009
Following a week off for Lightning and the playing of postponed games the
Grades will continue next Wednesday.
Following are the results for the first 4 rounds of the 5 x Grades events.
Also shown are the remaining 3 rounds pairings.
The third round of the clubs Lightning Championship was held last Wednesday
and clearly won by Milenko Lojanica with 8.5 / 9.
With a combined score of 17.5 / 18 there is nobody who can score enough in
the fourth and final round to stop him winning the Lightning trophy for
about the 10th year running.
Premier Grade
After being on 3/3 Abdulwahab Rashid has had an unfortunate accident in
Canberra and been hospitalized there for up to 4-weeks.
I was advised on Wednesday that he has withdrawn from the event.
As he only played 3 games, less than 50%, then the results of these games
will not be included, as per FIDE regulations.
They will be treated as 0-point Byes.
** They will be submitted for ratings purposes **
Those players due to play him in the remaining 3 rounds will receive a
0-point Bye instead.
So for the tournament effectively becomes a 7-player round-robin with each
player playing 6-games.

Dandenong Grades 2009
A reminder to all members that starting next week is the 9-round RapidPlay
Tournament.
There will be 3 rounds a night over the next 3 weeks; September 2nd, 9th &
16th
Last night the Grades events concluded.
Four of the five tournaments had multiple leaders going into the final
round, with 12 of 19 games having an influence on the eventual winners.
It finished with four of the tournaments having 2-players tie for first.
Only Geoff Lee in D-Grade managed to win outright first
All the final crosstables for the Grades are at the end of this report.
The results have been sent for rating and will be included in the ACF
ratings to come out September 1st
Premier Grade has also been sent for FIDE rating.
Premier Grade
Milenko Lojanica and Mehmedalija Dizdarevic led by 1/2-point and duly drew
their game to ensure themselves of equal first with 5.5-points.
It only remained to see if Don Machell could catch them with a win over
Richard Voon. This seemed unlikely early with Richard appearing to have
more space and what seemed to be a very dominating position. But there is a
difference between looking as though you are about to breakthrough and
actually doing it. Don hung on, Richard gave up a bishop for two passed
pawns, but Don blocked them. Eventually at 12.10am, after 106 moves, they
realised the game had been a draw since about 9.00pm sixty moves earlier.
In the remaining game Phillip Drew was held up at work and forfeited to
Rhys Hopkins, (he had rung earlier to inform us this was going to happen).
The final results of this tournament show everybody getting 1-point on
forfeit against Abdulwahab Rashid.
This is for the purposes of the tournament results only, as Abdulwahab was
forced to withdraw having not played 50% of his games.
For rating purposes, (both FIDE and ACF), the three games Abdulwahab played
will be rated with the correct result.
These were against Hopkins, Voon & Machell with Abdulwahab winning all
three.
Amazingly had Abdulwahab's score been included in the tournament results he
would have finished ahead of three players, despite missing more than half
of the event.
A-Grade
Chris Potter and Pezhman Ghayoori went into the final round as equal
leaders and both duly won to finish on 6-points, a full 2-points clear of
third. Pezhman defeated Mirko Kudric after the latter blundered a piece
early. Chris beat Mendel Armerman after Mendel overlooked a pin and was
faced with losing a lot of material.
B-Grade
Four players entered the last round tied for the lead on 4-points. Kevin
Forster overcame Peter Pispek to be the first of them to reach 5-points, he
was followed by Victor Lane who won a close game against Ahmet Yilmaz. This
left the other two, Ismet Gungordu and Bahri Senturk, who were playing each
other to see if one of them could win for a 3-way tie. But after a long
struggle Ismet was unable to finish off Bahri and the game finished in a
draw, leaving Kevin and Victor as joint winners.
C-Grade
There were three players equal first coming into the final round, but only
two of them, Frank Hewitt and Masood Alikhail, managed to win and they
finished equal first on 5.5-points. Stephen Bickell suffered his first
loss, to Peter Keefe, and this relegated him to equal third along with
Peter.
D-Grade
Geoff Lee had dominated this event with 5 / 5 going into the last round,
beating his closest rival, Ashley Mison, the previous round. But in the
last round Geoff blundered his queen and looked certain to lose. Ashley was
involved in a tough game against Jirrair Sissian which now became even more
important as a win would enable him to catch Geoff and tie for first. After
a long struggle Ashley did win, but in the meantime Geoff had staged a
amazing recovery to get a draw in a game that had been lost almost from the
start.
This left Geoff a deserving winner on 5.5-points, and the only outright
winner in all five tournaments.
Following are the final crosstables in score order for each grade.
