                            Dandenong Lightning Championship 2008
                           ***************************************************

The fourth and final of the Dandenong Lightning tournaments was held last night and Milenko Lojanica scored a convincing 8/9 to get a best two scoresof 15.5 which was enough to take the title by 1/2-point from Budi Maku.
Milenko lost to Richard Voon in the third round, but finished with six wins and becomes the Dandenong Lightning Champion for about the fortieth time in a row. (It's not really forty but I can't remember the last time he didn't win it)

As there were four tournaments thoughout the year, with the winner being the player with the best two combined scores, it would have been interesting had Milenko dropped another 1/2-point last night. This would have left him with 15.0 and in a tie for first with Budi Maku, who hasn't been to the club since the second Lightning event. I started pondering this about round 7, when it was clear Milenko would go close but with some tough opponents might give up a draw. In the past the title had been decided by a
playoff imediately after the final round, I decided that this year would be the same. Had Milenko scored 7.5 I would announce a playoff between him and Budi, the fact that Budi was not around would simply mean he would lose ontime.
The fairness and legality of such a ruling is obviously questionable, but with Budi not around to question it I thought I might get away with it. My other thought was that there would be a tiebreak, in the event of a tie the player with the highest third score would win, Budi not having played in the last two events would have a third score of zero, again Milenko would be the winner. One problem I had was that no tiebreak of any sort had been announced at the beginning, which it should have been.
I was extremely happy when Milenko scored 8-points. I mention all of this for no other reason than to say these thoughts going
through my head were certainly the reason I lost 4 of my last 5 games. I am sure it has nothing to do with my lack of tactical awareness under severe time constraints.

Following is the crosstable of the fourth Lightning tournament. Also shown are the results of all players who competed in at least two of  four tournaments.

Dandenong Lightning #3

Dandenong Chess Club started at the new premises with the third of the four
lightning tournaments to determine this years lightning championship.
The general assessment of the players seemed to be that the new venue is
far superior to the old.

The main surprise in the lightning events this year is that Milenko
Lojanica is yet to win one of them outright.
Last night Milenko lost in the fourth round to Domagoj Dragicevic who in
turn lost to Abdulwahab Rashid in the fifth round.
With both tied on 4/5 they trailed Abdulwahab by 0.5-points, but Domagoj
managed to win his remaining games finishing on 8/9 with Milenko 7.5 and
Abdulwahab a further point back in third.

Top seed Malcolm Pyke also got to 4/5 before losing three straight games.
Although it was only lightning and I don't think he was overly serious, he
seemed determined to accidently leave pieces en prise in most games.
As usual strange things happen in lightning games, even the most simple
completely won king and pawn endings are sometimes lost, just ask Philip
Drew.
(Apologies Philip, I promise to stop reminding you of this by 2018)

The winner of the lightning is the player with the highest score, taking
their best two results.
At this stage, with one tournament to go, Milenko Lojanica & Budi Maku have
15 / 18 followed by Domagoj with 14.5, Abdulwahab Rashid with 13 and
Mehmedalija Dizdarevic with 12.5. A few players could catch them if they
score 9/9 in the remaining event and none of the above score higher than
previously, but it is unlikely. Probably the favorite would be Domagoj as
he could easily improve his current 2nd highest score of 6.5 while both
Budi and Milenko would have to improve on 7.5 to get any higher.

Dandenong Lightning #2

Last night was the second of four lightning tournaments that will detemine
the clubs lightning champion for the year.

The winner of the first tournament, Budi Maku, was this time challenged by
many times club lightning champion, Milenko Lojanica. But Budi was up to
it, drawing with Milenko and finishing equal first with him on 7.5 / 9.

Milenko won 6 and drew 3 whilst Budi won 7, drew 1 and lost a very
entertaining game to Mehmedalija Dizdarevic.

Dandenong Lightning #1

The first of four lightning tournaments for the year was held.,
Each players two best results will be accumulated to determine the club's
lightning champion for the year.

Following on from his victory in the Easter Cup Budai Maku finished 1-point
clear of the field with 7.5 / 9
His only loss was to top seed Domagoj Dragicevic in the fourth round,
following this Budai won the last five including wins over Zdravko
Lojanica, Mehmedalija Dizdarevic, Abdulwahab Rashid and Don Machell. As is
usual in lightning luck plays a role, Budai was completely lost against
Dizdarevic before Mehmedalija left his king in check.
