12 Hopkins, Rhys    1662 [0]  .5:.5   Lycett, Garry      1799 [0]

The second round saw 12 players added to the event. A number of players returned from holidays and there are also six new members which was pleasing. Some players simply couldn't play round one due to the extreme heat the previous Wednesday, hopefully the president Chris Potter will remember to talk to the centre management so we can figure out which buttons to press
to use the airconditioning. The games all went according to rating except for Rhys Hopkins repeating last years club championship result in again beating Abdulwahab Rashid. I think would be the first time Abdulwahab has started a tournament at Dandenong with two losses. The lucky recipient of this is Alan Gray who next week gets to play an opponent nearly twice his rating.

19 Dales, Ray         1000 [0]  0:1   Mather, Craig      461 [0]

Another two players brought the total to 40 which is a great turnout for the first tournament of the year. Even more pleasing is that 8 of them are brand new to the club. Top seeds Milenko Lojanica and Don Machell continued on their merry way with wins against Manny Chua and Reginald Chong, although both were very hard fought with Milenko especially fortunate to eke out a win in a king
and pawn ending. Reginald showed that his rating of 1381 will increase soon and that his first round win over Abdulwahab Rashid was no fluke, although in the end Don proved just too strong.

These two were joined on 3 / 3 by Philip Drew who defeated Richard Voon with a spectacular rook sacrifice to force mate that nobody saw coming.Philip had played very well and seemed to be in good position for most of the game, except for one move where he left his queen on prise to a straightforward two-move combination. Philip realised what he had done, but Richard returned to the board and without thinking played an obvious move, whereupon Philip, with great relief, removed the threat and went on to victory. I am sure that just 10 seconds thought by Richard and he would have seen it.

A very good result was Frank Hewitt's draw against Zdravko Lojanica,  a 600-point rating gap. And it was Zdravko who was lucky to
scramble a draw from a clearly lost position.

Another 5 players joined the tournament to make 45 in total, including 13 new players to the club. Even better is that 6 of them are juniors, meaning the annual most improved junior trophy can be given to someone other than Daniel Potter or Rhys Hopkins.
Last night the two top seeds, Milenko Lojanica and Don Machell, moved to 4/4 and as the only players on that score they will meet next week. Milenko overcame Philip Drew's Sicilian Dragon after an oversight by Philip allowed Milenko to smash through on the kingside. Don had a harder fight against Miralem Campara but his constant pressure finally succeeded in a breakthrough.
These two are followed by Rhys Hopkins whose win over Ramo Burzic took him to 3.5-points.
There are also rating prizes in the U1600, U1400 and Unrated categories. The U1600 is being led by Mendel Armerman, Philip Drew, Reginald Chong and Manny Chua, all on 3-points. The U1400 is being led by John Seehusen and Peter Keefe, both on 2-points. The Unrated is being led by Elvis Espejo on 2-points.

Following are the results for Rd4 and the pairings for Rd5

Don Machell took the sole lead with an extremely well played victory overtop seed Milenko Lojanica. Don is now on 5 / 5 and leads a group of four players by a full point.

Going into round 6 it looked as though there was no stopping Don Machell from progressing to a tournament win.
His sixth round opponent, Manny Chua, didn't stop him, but he managed to slow him down with a draw.
This keeps Don, who leads with 5.5 / 6, within striking distance of at least three players, Milenko Lojanica 5-points, Philip Drew and MannyChua 4.5-points.

Next week it is Philip's turn to try and knock off the leader. Hopefully if he reaches the same position he did last night against Mendel Armerman he will get more than 1/2-point from it. With well positioned knights dominating Mendel's locked in bishops it looked only a matter of patience and slowly strengthening his position for Philip to get the win. But Philip chose to allow a mass exchange of pieces, Mendel took full advantage to equalise and the game finished in a draw. Equal leader in his rating group but facing Don next week, that extra 1/2-point could have been valuable to Philip.

The board two game between Milenko Lojanica & Rhys Hopkins was interesting, not long after the round began I noticed they had already reached a double rook and pawns ending. How they ripped though the opening and middlegame so
quickly was beyond me, I imagine it was theory they were both familiar with. Shortly after that Rhys lost a pawn and although he fought hard he eventually went down to the tournament's top seed.

Next week Milenko faces Abdulwahab Rashid who started the event poorly but has won the last 4-rounds to bring himself back into contention. If he defeats Milenko it would likely produce an interesting last round as he would be a dangerous opponent for whoever was leading.

Unfortunately Mirko Kudric was unable to play last night as he is in hospital. I am sure all members of the club wish Mirko a speedy recovery and hope he is back next week.

The leaders of the rating groups are; U1600 -  Philip Drew & Manny Chua  4.5-points,  Ahmet Yilmaz & Mendel
Armerman 4-points U1400 -  FrankHewitt, Reginald Chong & Peter Keefe 3-points,  Peter Pispek
2.5-points Unrated - Elvis Espejo 3-points,  Hessari Habib & Joe Alphonso 2.5-points

Don Machell only managed to draw with Philip Drew but it was enough to keep the outright lead as Milenko Lojanica and Manny Chua could also manage only 1/2-points in their own games. Don moved to 6 / 7 and retains a slender 1/2-point advantage over Milenko,
further back on 5-points are Manny Chua, Philip Drew and Mendel Armerman who are all having very good tournaments.

Next week Milenko must rely on his brother Zdravko to at least draw with Don next week, while he himself will be trying to get a victory and a share of first.

Leaders in the Rating Groups;
U1600:  Manny Chua,  Philip Drew,  Mendel Armerman  5-points,  Ahmet

A reminder to all members that next Wednesday March25 is the clubs Annual General Meeting.
All members are urged to attend.

Leading Milenko Lojanica by only 1/2-point going into the final round Don Machell took only 1-hour to wrap up the tournament victory when his opponent, Zdravko Lojanica, failed to arrive.  This of course cost Zdravko's brother, Milenko, any chance of catching Don.
It was a disappointing way for Don to win, but certainly not his fault, and Don had led throughout and fully deserved the victory, especially after defeating top seed Milenko in their individual encounter. Congratulations to Don who finished with 7 / 8  (6 wins and 2 draws)

Milenko finished outright 2nd on 6.5-points after defeating Mendel Armerman, 3rd place went to Miralem Campara with 6-points after he disposed of Manny Chua. Equal 4th with 5.5-points was Richard Voon and Abdulwahab Rashid after they
overcame Rhys Hopkins and Philip Drew respectively.

With Mendel, Manny and Philip all losing it allowed Mirko Kudric to catch them on 5-points and they shared the U1600 rating prize.
All four had very good tournaments, Mirko scoring 5 / 7 after missing one round by being in hospital.

The U1400 rating prize was won outright by Peter Pispek who finished the event well to get 4.5-points. He finished just ahead of Reginal Chong and Geoff Lee, both on 4-points. Reginald looked as though he might have won last nights game when a piece up against Chris Potter although it was a tough ending, made tougher when Chris won Reginald's rook and the game finished in a draw. Meanwhile Geoff had his best tournament for quite a while and capped it off with a very well played win against Peter Keefe.

The Unrated prize was a close tussle between Elvis Espejo and Hessari Habib but in the Hessari defeated Ismet Gungordu in the last round to also get to 4.5-points and take the prize. Elvis was only 1/2-point behind. It was an
extremely impressive performance by Hessari who started the tournament in Rd4 and ended up scoring 4.5 / 5

Prizes;
1st            Don Machell   7-points
U1600     Manny Chua,  Philip Drew,  Mendel Armerman,  Mirko Kudric
5-points
U1400     Peter Pispek  4.5-points,
Unrated  Hessari Habib  4.5-points,

Following are the results for Rd8
** The ratings shown are from Mar'09 but the tournament was played and the
rating prizes based on Dec'08 ratings.
